Do you find yourself thinking I wish I could achieve more?

Why is it that I can’t seem to convert my potential to performance?

The way to deal with this feeling of being stuck is by decisively dismantling these 5 excuses

I’ll do it later

This excuse at its root is about procrastination. The consolation is that you apparently will do what needs to be done but at a later time. The idea is that perhaps delaying the task will lighten the load of doing it. The reality is that a task not done only increases the stress level and worse still a task delayed will likely be a task that’s never done. The right time to do the right thing is right now.

The right time to do the right thing is right now.

It’s difficult

We are instinctively wired to choose the easier path. But remember that if it is difficult it will be worth it. And if it is difficult it’s also probably the right thing to do. Champions are champions because they go against the flow of choosing the easy path. They not only do the difficult but they master it. Difficult becomes easy when you do it frequently.

I will fail

Fear drives this excuse. The reality is that you fail when you don’t take on the opportunity or work on the task. You learn when you do. It is natural to feel anxious or nervous but doing what you have to do despite these feelings causes you to grow. On the other hand, succumbing to fear will stunt your growth.

I don’t feel like it

This is one of the most common excuses. You know going for a jog or to the gym is the healthy and right option but you don’t, why? Because you tell yourself that you don’t feel like it. Growth requires you to do what you have to do irrespective of whether you feel like it or you don’t. If you let your feelings drive you, your growth will be sporadic at best.

Growth requires you to do what you have to do irrespective of whether you feel like it or you don’t.

I’ve always done it like this

This excuse is based on resistance to change. If you desire new outcomes then you have to be willing to adopt new methods. What worked in the past will not get you the results in the present. Get comfortable with change. Change is the catalyst for growth.

Get comfortable with change. Change is the catalyst for growth.

It is sad when you provide excuses to others but when you give yourself excuses it is a tragedy. Don’t let these 5 excuses stop you in your pursuit of excellence.
