Move Forward, Don’t Move On — Life after loss

It’s been two and a half months since my daughter passed. I miss her terribly, and her absence hurts more than words can describe.

Navigating this season has been difficult and exhausting. I’ve realized that life moves on—time doesn’t stop, and the routine continues. So, what do you do after a life-changing loss?

The common advice is to ‘move on.’ It sounds practical: don’t dwell on the past, what’s done is done, so get back to life. The problem with this approach is that it doesn’t recognize the need for emotional healing. As a result, people tend to bottle up unresolved pain, which manifests in various ways. There’s also a tendency to escape dealing with grief by burying yourself in work rather than facing it in a healthy way.

The other extreme is to ‘stay stuck’ in the past. You keep reliving the loss, constantly replaying it in your mind. This leads to mentally residing in a space of suffering, where you begin to see life through the lens of a victim. Stagnation and resignation become your reality.

If ‘moving on’ and ‘staying stuck’ won’t help, what will? Perhaps ‘moving forward’ is the answer. But isn’t moving forward the same as moving on? While they sound similar, they are different. Here are three ways you can move forward:

  1. Acknowledge your emotions. Face the pain and work through the struggle in a healthy way, rather than suppressing it.
  2. Take small, intentional steps. Focus on your work or daily responsibilities, but remember it’s not about speed. It’s about taking one step at a time.
  3. Pause when necessary. Understand that some days will hit harder than others, and it’s okay to slow down when you need to.

I’ve been trying to move forward.

Conclusion:

Moving forward doesn’t mean forgetting or pretending the pain isn’t there. It’s about learning to live alongside it, giving space for both grief and growth. The process is slow, but each small step is progress. Healing isn’t linear, but with intentionality, you can move forward, not away from the loss, but with it.
